Radio Likkle I “The Voice of the Sun” Community Internet Radio Station & Community Cyber
Over two years ago the RCCN began the Radio Carib-RAAS Project (RC-RP) to establish a community radio in Little Corn Island at the request of the local Communal Board. In August of 2009 the Communal Board approved the location of the radio station and later that year construction began on the studio. Since then the community leaders have had meetings which have brought about the name of the radio station, and it’s first Radio Board. The community leaders in a public meeting decided the name of the radio station to be Radio Likkle I ‘The Voice of the Sun’. Likkle a Creole word was selected for use instead of the proper English word little in the name of the station to promote the Black Creole Culture of Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast. Radio Likkle I just came on the air this month via the internet server called Ustream and will be broadcasting daily online.
In the beginning of November 2011 the inside of the Radio Likkle I studio was completed with the help of a NGO know as CommonThreadz whom donated the inside paint. CommonThreadz is building a community learning center right next to the radio station and we look forward to furthering its success; as it is in the Mission of Radio Likkle I to help support educational centers which benefit the community. During the month of November the first staff training was conducted; to open Radio Likkle I as a Community Internet Radio Station and Community Cyber.
Radio Likkle I Community cyber provides cheap internet access, printing services, and other computer based services to the community. Since its first week open it has become a hub for the young people of Little Corn Island whom are discovering computers and the internet for their first time. Also the cyber gives year round internet service to Radio Likkle I members, besides being a location for computer and communication training. Half of the Radio Likkle I Studio acts as the cyber and the other half as the Radio Studio. During the beginning of next year Radio Likkle I will be receiving its official broadcast license and building the tower which will send its FM signal to Little Corn Island, Corn Island, and beyond.
The RCCN is very happy with the progress of this first project now called officially Radio Likkle I ‘The Voice of the Sun’ which is currently open as a Community Cyber and Internet Radio Station in Little Corn Island. With this project so far the RCCN has created many small jobs on the two islands, and as spent over 5000.00 US within the region on building materials and other administrative fees. We know that this is not much when compared to a major corporation or factory, but for us and the many people’s lives this progress as brought betterment too it means plenty. The RCCN whom have been the major investors in this project is but a few people who have Liv-icated themselves to this cause and development of this Community Based Media Network.
We give thanks to all the volunteers whom are right now working hard to keep Radio Likkle I functioning. We are looking to hire workers and begin to open spots on the internet radio broadcast to people in the community whom want to be heard on the radio. Radio Likkle I conducts weekly free trainings on how to operate the Radio Board and work on the radio to people from the community whom want to work on air. All the Likkle money made right now goes just to paying the internet bill, and light bill to keep these types of activities going. We always love it when people out there support us either by becoming a member of the Radio Station, advertising with the radio station, or just a small donation.
Radio Likkle I will always be expanding, some of current goals besides being on the FM dial in early next year will be; to Go Green by powering parts of the radio station with solar power and wind, have the first democratic election of the radio board by members of the radio station, to make the radio station self sustainable through its own profits, and to offer more training in computers and communications to the community. These are the most important goals for next years progress at Radio Likkle I, and we look forward to your cooperation. Enjoy listening to us Grow!
